How to read the number

The Fear and Greed Index is a contrarian sentiment gauge on a 0-100 scale. A reading below 25 means investors are in Extreme Fear, historically the point at which markets have been oversold. A reading above 75 means Extreme Greed, which has often preceded pullbacks. The index is not a timing signal and can sit at an extreme for weeks at a time.

What goes into the index

Seven inputs are combined into the single score: market momentum measured against the S&P 500's 125-day moving average, stock price strength, stock price breadth, the put/call options ratio, market volatility as measured by the VIX, junk bond demand, and safe haven demand. Each sub-indicator is charted separately on the main dashboard.

Compare sentiment against a stock

The reading on its own says nothing about a particular holding. To see whether sentiment has actually moved with a stock, overlay the index on that stock's price and read the correlation: Fear and Greed vs SPY, vs QQQ, vs NVDA, or any other ticker.

How does the Fear and Greed Index correlate with individual stocks?

Correlation varies by ticker. This site computes the Pearson correlation coefficient between the index and any stock or ETF you enter, over whichever date range you are viewing, so you can measure the relationship rather than assume it. A coefficient near +1 means sentiment and price moved together, near -1 means they moved opposite, and near 0 means no linear relationship.
